Question 2 and 3
Music Video
Practice music video
11 April 2012
Evaluation Question Three 3.What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
Having Feedback from my audience throughout my whole project enabled me to gather different ideas that would help towards constructing our music video,Cd cover and Magazine advert . Starting off with constructing a questionnaire allowed us to obtain the right information of whom our target audience would be , the sort of music they listened to , there age range and lastly what they enjoyed to see when watching a music video.
Firstly when we constructed our prelim task as a mock up towards our actual music video enabled us to create the right theme that should be placed with the song . Interviewing a member of our target audience i was able to gather a range of ideas that came to mind when she had listened to the song . After interviewing a couple of candidates they all came up the same idea that included a couple meeting at a bar and getting off with each other or having a party and finally the couple meet each other and fall in love. Also having my target audience look at my prelim task i was able to hear their likes and dislikes and what they thought needed changing , this was very helpful as we were able to make improvements later on to the actual music video.once changed we were able to adjust to appeal to the target audience.
Audience feedback was very important when trying to make improvements to our final cut of our music video , by having change a little cut in the video could change the whole concept and thought throughout the whole video.Once feedback was reviewed we would change the idea that we thought was creating the problem and notice the difference . This was very helpful, and constructive criticism was the best out of the feedback.
And lastly the feedback gained from the Cd cover allowed me create a better overall outcome than the last product created , just be taking new images and contrasting different colours together.
Evaluation Question Two
Audience Feedback
Secondly " i liked the way that they CD cover and the ad was very bright and vibrant it caught my attention from a distance ,if i was to see this in a store i would be interested who the artist was and what type of genre they were , as you are unable to tell by the pictures of lip .i think that if you was to do this again i think you should include facial images of the artist on the front and magazine ad , to enable a larger audience to make recognition between the two , as in the music video and the cd cover.
I found this feedback very using and constructive as know i have more knowledge on what to include and what not to include in the future of creating an media product.
Evaluation Question one : In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
I believe that in many ways that our media product demonstrated the forms and conventions of real media products by having a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals , as they we illustrated in the background behind the singers , this way we were able to contradict the lyrics and amplify at the same time. This being one of the key features identified by Andrew Goodwin. We explored this feature for example the lyric " with the whisper in my ear i heard you say" , at this point in the video the couple are close together and the male whispers into the females ear.
In our music video we tried to create a relationship between the beat of the music and the change in the visuals, such as each time the beat changed we tried to make to visual change at the same time.
Andrew Goodwin has identified another key feature of the forms and conventions being a that a : 'particular music genre may have their own music video style and iconography' such as seen in Kanye West music video and songs being on the genre of Hip&Hop and R&B his music videos are very industry and conventionally built up to connote the artist' image being rich , stylish and very flashy.I have considered that these artist represent themselves in this way so that they are able to target their specific audience and others . As our music genre is garage we decided to have many performance shots to follow the convention of the garage genre . Having shots being filmed in the the studio i believe illustrated that we were trying to portray the garage and urban environment .
Looking at Andrew Goodwins key feature another code and convention we featured in out own music video was developing the artist their own star iconography, i think that we explored this feature the most being the most significant as we felt that our target audience was our main priority to satisfy our viewers into what they wanted to see.For creating a story line that happens behind the scenes makes the music video more interesting and keeps the audience involved and eager for what happens next .
The performance images allowed both the artist to have their own star personalities we also used a couple shots of voyeuristic being another convention .Having a small story line and having the visuals into two clips onto of each other the idea of the artist having flashbacks while they are singing is not as clear as we wanted it to be but by the end of the music video you gather the idea . having the flashbacks idea was discovered whilst watching another rock video (open eyes).
The narrative throughout the story line is based on the couple and the flash backs, although this isn't shown all the way through the music video. The idea of having the behind the scenes effect by filming what you don't normally see in a original music video ,as filming in the studio looks like a sort of grime / rap video as seen on YouTube that is filmed the same target audience.
Lastly the Digipak and magazine ad were also important having the right codes and conventions towards a real life media product .Was essential to allow the product to look effective enough to suit the genre . Having bright , vibrant but also neutral colours allowed us to make the media products look attractive and eye catching . i felt that this illustrated the garage genre well .
Pictures I Intend to use in on My Digipak & Magazine Advert (Male)

As the male artist in the song very fun and energetic i found it useful to use photo's of the model where he would have headphones on his head , as done in the music video showing sense of connection between the two of the music video and the Cd Cover and the magazine ad .
Also having a serious image of the model and a another holding a silly face allows the audience that the artist can enjoy himself and also can be taken seriously whilst making good music.
Pictures I Intend to use in on My Digipak & Magazine Advert (Female)

By using these images i believe i will be able to create a music Cd cover & Magazine advert that would represent the artist by her voice and her personality portrayed by her type of music and to also sell the artist . By using the colours involved in the colour scheme i am able to connect my research and progression of constructing the two together . i think the bright pink stick stands out most to me , the same with the Rihanna Loud album. The images of (me) i believe the facial expressions let off a wild wacky personality which i believe with the actual artist Kal Lavelle which is very exciting and fun as you don't what her next move is.
Colour Scheme
Analysis of an digipak

Looking at the former R&B/ Hip-Hop artists album cover for one of her latest albums we are unable to clearly determine which sort of genre of music the artist belongs to because of the way she is posing and her facial expression is very calm and seductive enticing her target audience to pick up her latest album. The Red hair and the red lipstick contrast against her skin complexion and also the black mascara makes the shape of her eyes stand out . The letters [LOUD] clearly stand out to the audience , although they are not bold , they are clear and noticeable because they are white and subtle. And dissimilarity towards the image behind the text.

Looking at back of the album cover , the colour scheme is very dull although the model being the artist in the image has red hair , which stands out from the dullness of the actual cover as the colour red is very bright and vibrant catching the eye of the consumer . The back cover features a Track list , a Bar code , the record label and lastly copyright information.Although the back is more dull from the front , there is still a seductive theme throughout from front to back , by: the models pose , her facial expression , her clothes and the exposure of her tattoo.
Lastly to top off the album cover there was a promotional video advertised to her target audience which is contrast. The promotional video has many features of the cd cover. Looking at the video we are able to connect the two together.
Analysis of an advert

This music advert would draw the attention to anyone having past it , because of the bright energetic colours this would attract you to look at the artist being a Beyonce , having her featured on the advert along with the tropical coloured dress reflects on her upbeat and electrifying music to entice her target audience.
The font used to spell out the artist name is very stylish and stands out from the rest of the text used on the rest of the advert , allow this to catch the eye of the consumer being the right forms and conventions for the point of having a music advert.
Although the initial text on the advert being " New Album in stores now " it claims that they want her target audience to buy the album in store to support the artist.

Digipack, Draft II

Following my critics advice i decided to change my CD cover to a more simple design and change the font colour to something more neutral being orange , i believe changing the font colour, size and style has changed the whole front cover giving the mood of the front cover mood relaxed and chill than eye catching and in your face.
Digipack, Draft 1

This was my first draft of the CD cover , i believe that it was a good attempt as the face was very firm and stood out . I wanted to make the CD cover bold , i believe that i could achieve this by adding a bold font and making the writing pink i believed that it would stand on the shelves. I then looked to my former critic for advice . MY audience feedback was that : " i like this attempt of the CD cover as i feel that the image on the front cover is very powerful . the girl looks very strong and serious , it makes you interested in the sort of music that would be on the album. Although the writing does stand something about it is too print , make the album cover very feminine . You should try a neutral colour.
Construction photos/possible/actual locations

At the start of our planning we looked at different locations that we wished to film our music video and the EMI Studio in the roundhouse was one of the places that we looked at to film .Although we were unable to film in this studio we filmed in a different music studio

I did a bit of the filming as well as the acting of the singer . although the photo shown we did not include this part in our music video , as we felt the whole concept didn't fit into the music video .

We decided to film in this part of Queens park , as we believe it was a calm neutral place to film in and also we felt that the environment would fit into our music video well .

Audience feedback
INITIAL IDEAS- I like the choice of song as it is current and a chilled vibe. It is definatley a song that i would listen to myself and would look forward to seeing a music video for. I think that the ideas that you have for the video are interesting and fits with the vibe of the track, i also like the idea of having behind the scenes within the video.
MUSIC VIDEO- I think the music video is interesting and is something i would watch again. I like the idea of seeing behind the scenes and getting the opportunity to actually see the artists recording the music and having fun in the studio, although there is alot of this in video and does become abit boring after a while. It also makes the video more exciting by adding the storyline that you cant really figure out exactly whats happening. Overall i think that it could be passed for a low budget professional music video as it has the same basic ideas as many other music videos i have watched myself.
DIGIPAK-I think the CD cover works well, the use of a plain boring colour and the picture of the singers with the design over works really well as it makes it stand out as something different. From the cover i wouldn’t necessarily know that the music is from the garage genre but i can tell that it is not rock or hip hop.

EVALUATION SCRIPT
- 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
In our music video we decided to follow certain conventions of the music video such as the performance crossed with a loose narrative, fast and rhythmic cuts to compliment the sound track and engaging to the viewer, this was inspired by theories by Andrew Goodwin.
The use of the “behind the scene” studio location to show the artists are usually used in freestyle videos on the internet or remix or cover videos, these locations are recognisable with artists very into their music and it’s a personal window into the making to the music we listen to, it is also linked into the internet (2.0) generation where YouTube is the main site used for music consumption.
The use of other locations such as the park and outdoor stage was a sort of documentation as well as a performance as we are with the artist just sort of hanging out and getting a performance.
We used Andrew Godwins music video theory specifically to construct elements for our music video along with genre conventions. Rapid cuts and genre related visuals compliment the music and amplifies the music and performance shots amplifying the lyrics through performance shots showing medium close ups of our “stars” creating a sort of “a star image”, giving the video an iconic, low budget, “do it yourself” feel that can relate directly to our target audience. We decided to not use any intertextual references since the track is a throwback in itself with modern artists lending vocals.
We used performance shots dominantly to create a star image of both actors/singers, as well as adding a slight voyeuristic touch it is also another convention we have decided to include in our video. The minimal storyline and visuals are challenging the conventions in a sense that the story line and visuals are meant to be a fast and not 100% clear, just glimpses to imply the idea of a flashback or memories flashing on screen to give a loose narrative as the song itself has a loose narrative to its lyrics.
Editing techniques are inspired by me looking at dubstep video “shot yourself in the foot again” by Example and Skream. The cuts are on beat with the music and compliment the melodic bass. Our editing technique uses the cuts in the same way but superimposing two images to give a better sense of disorientation and a flashback quality where you are not quite sure what you are focusing on rather than showing a full on narrative.
Also showing a shot of the song title on a computer
- 2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
How do different things like star image effect, and representation with star image and the artist (hot have you constructed the representation of the artist)
Genre importance and audience to the genre (sub genre)
Branding (typography, branding related to marketing)
Mise en scene andtextual analasys and how and why you created your mise en scene and how effective it is. RELATIONSHIP WITH THE AUDIENCE. Digi pack stuff too
In the video our actors/singers/stars are represented as fun, playful young people with talent, we chose to reflect this on our front cover and Ad, we hope use this element as a selling point and this should fit in with the tone and mood of the song. This affected the video and digipack in the sense of instead of having a conceptual theme it will be more focused on iconography.
I chose to not focus on a straight up star image but to have a colourful and abstract edge to the digipack and the blurred lights over the two actors was an idea that I thought reflected the chilled vibe and urban theme of the video, also the colour scheme reflected the chilled vibe the song has. The video seemed to have an “edge” to so in the final drafts I chose to have our stars through shapes to make more striking and interesting visuals opposed to a conventional portrait, explored in drafts and ideas. The font used was chosen especially because it was a casual font yet didn’t have too many connotations attached to it. The clothing of the performers was casual yet not conforming to any genre (eg: hoodies and caps to connect with the hip hop crowd), this look is open to connect to any genre or subgenre of music and attracting maybe more than just garage fans, this also reflects onto the digipack and the advertisement.
The idea is to use an urban setting to connect with the audience and urban themes to solidify this in the ancillary texts. Keeping a low budget feel, this connects with audience as our target audience is used to consuming music from youtube and the video has the feel that it is made be one of the target audience themselves.
Without feeling glamorous, the stars of the music video connect with the audience by looking at the camera, smiling and having a relaxed body language as if they are with the audience performing especially for them. We chose a low budget studio setting for our performance shots to show the passion for music and show the creation of the music and pringing the music video to a more personal level. With the “narrative” the “London at night” theme connects with most of the target audience as it is recognisable and the aftermath of a party scene along with fireworks creates a celebratory feel, the fun fair then the stumbling home creates a live atmosphere winds down and the drunken night continues at home, relatable to most teens who have experienced this.
All of these features are important to conforming to the genre/subgenre because it solidifies its place with all the other music videos and ancillary texts but standing out at the same time. It conforms to the conventions but at the same time brings a few more features to the table such as having pop and indie artists singing on a garage instrumental and not be generic.
- 3. What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
From constant audience feedback throughout the editing stages as well as the pre production stage, it has help us ground our ideas and stick to themes and ideas that would appeal and attract our target audience. Reoccurring themes such as couples, parties, love and the “night out” along with the “morning after” all reflects on our target audience socially and just by having the themes present makes the video more entertaining. The feedback from the music video was mainly positive and the feedback told us the fast cuts and contrasting visuals were engaging and compliment the visuals and was a interesting break from the performance shots.
- 4. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Firstly, using the Cannon xm2’s for shooting the music video was a lot easier than using the Panasonic to record on tape. Using SD cards gave us more freedom when it came to shooting indoors and outdoors; we didn’t have to worry about the tape jamming in the changes in humidity or temperature and overall the cameras were smaller and this made travelling easier. The only downside was that all the settings were automatic so we didn’t have as much creative control when it came to focusing and auto focus did create some aesthetic problems at times.
Using Final cut pro to edit was easy, accessible and I learned to explore more techniques to recover or enhance the music video. Colour correction was the main filter used to enhance visuals, it pushed the visual quality past a home-made video quality. Using opacity to superimpose images gave a flash back quality, it allowed me to show scenes from “the night before” without revealing exactly what happened and this added to the effect of being hung over, not remembering what you did last night.
Websites we used were sites like slideshare, prezzy and youtube to upload videos, documents and slideshows and use embedded links to use them on the blog. Not only were they easy and practical, they made the blog look better.
During research, Facebook, Blackberry Messenger and youtube helped when it came to audience research. Comments on youtube videos where a place where we observed peoples feedback on our and similar videos. For example out “prelim” task got two positive feedback comments, one from the producer of the original track and one from a random user. Blackberry and facebook let us contact our target audience and ask questions using instant messaging services and screen grabs for recording the conversations.
When searching for artist information or record label research and even looking at past products, google was the easiest way of finding what we needed to look for. For an archive of album covers, I simple searched for album covers to compare and get inspiration for our digipack.
I mainly used photoshop to put together the digipack and the magazine advert. Since there are preset layouts installed onto photoshop it was easy to customize and create a digipack/advert with maximum creative control. With choosing font i had control over the length, spacing, colour, transparency of the text, and if the font i chose wasn’t to my liking i could manipulate it to suit my vision. Without using any presets, a vision in my head could easily be transferred onto the screen and perfected over a few drafts.

Could Just Be The Bassline .
We decided to choose the track, ‘Could just be the Bassline by Artful Mark and Kat Lavelle’ as the track we wished to produce a music video for, as at the time we all like the sound of the song and believe that we could create a video that not only related to our own lives but to the lyrics in the song. At the time we had chosen to focus our research and coursework onto this song the song did not have a video to it, which allowed us to broaden our ideas and create a music video that related to the lyrics in the song and also which mated the singer’s voices. I believe that another reason for us choosing this track was because it was a mix between garage, dub step, and funky being all three genres in one song allowed us all to listen and engage into something we all like and felt we could make good progress on in a music video.

Music video production (proposal)
For our music video our target audience is 16 – 24, we thought this would be a good age group to encourage to look and listen to our music video as it was people in our own age range and also when doing research into what sort of music people also listened as well as our selves this was the same age range that listened to that genre of music.
The research made into our content / subject matter of a possible music video was that the song chosen was in the garage genre a sort of old school mix of hip hop and funky. Looking at the artist and listening to the lyrics of the song allowed us to create a plan of what sort of music video we wished to create and fit the video to the content produced in the lyrics of the song.
Looking through the groups ideas of what they wanted to produce for the music video we all came to one conclusion and idea to share all of our ideas and place them all together as most of our ideas were along the same topics / genre we made a decision and agreed on which ideas were believed were best to suit the sort of genre and type of music related to our song. Most of our ideas include a couple messing around together and meeting up at a bar (this idea was produced by hearing the lyrics in the song ‘standing at the bar ‘ ) we also thought that it would be a good idea to have the actors in the piece singing in like a studio behind the story of the couple meeting each other. So by having two scenes on top of each other keeping the viewer interested in the song and the story behind it (created by using the opacity bar) . Also we thought that it would be a good idea to show the couple with friends drinking and getting ready to go out to have fun. By doing this scene we would be able to link our own lives to the audience and in the video as the actors are young and the target audience are in the same age range. This was also recommended by certain interviewees as they wished to relate their own lives to other young people
The construction of the music video has been planned as a group effort as we wished to all contribute in different areas of doing planning and doing research. And secondly the construction of creating the music I, Riannah st Louis decided to be an actor as well as filming director. Whereas Robbie Asante choose to be editor and camera operator .
